Discover memorials digitally!

From now on, groups can also get to know the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial, the Bullenhuser Damm, Poppenbüttel and Fuhlsbüttel Memorials digitally with pedagogical guidance in an interactive and participatory way, dealing with various key topics on National Socialist persecution and the concentration camp system in depth.

The new online offerings complement the existing educational offerings of the Foundation of Hamburg Memorials and Learning Centres. Beyond pandemic-related restrictions on our educational operations, they are primarily aimed at institutions and groups for whom an on-site visit is not possible or is very difficult. In addition to purely online formats, pedagogically guided digital preparations for a memorial site visit can also be booked for youth and adult groups.

For the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial and the Bullenhuser Damm Memorial, we offer digital formats for youth and adults in German and English. For the Poppenbüttel and Fuhlsbüttel memorials, there are offerings in German for young people. You can find more information about the formats here: [Download: Infotext-PDF].

The digital educational offers introduce the history of the respective places with the help of video clips. In dialogue with the team members and in working groups, the participants deal with selected topics. Thematic focal points of the offers for the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial are: Prisoner groups, living and working conditions in the camp, biographies of inmates, the camp-SS as well as the subsequent use of the grounds and the history of the memorial site. The offers for the Poppenbüttel and Fuhlsbüttel Memorials each include site-specific topics such as women in the concentration camp as well as resistance and persecution. At the Bullenhuser Damm Memorial, the focus is on mass murder by the SS in Hamburg at the end of World War II.

The digital offerings were developed as part of the "Discover Memorials Digitally" project. The project was funded through the "Neustart Kultur" funding program of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, which provided corona-related investments for cultural and educational institutions.
