One hundred people from Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Denmark, Germany, Israel, the US and South Africa attended the “Future of Remembrance” forum on 5–6 May 2015. It was an opportunity to come together for children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of former concentration camp prisoners, including those who were persecuted for being Jewish or for political reasons as well as former slave labourers from Eastern Europe. For some of them, it was the first time to participate in such discussions. Everyone agreed that it was important to make the many different family backgrounds more apparent. Read more

Fifty-four survivors of the Neuengamme concentration camp and its satellite camps came from all over Europe, Israel, and the US together with their families to attend the celebrations at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial commemorating the end of the war and the liberation of the concentration camp 70 years ago. We would like to draw your attention to the conference “The Victims and Places of Reprisals in Occupied Europe”, which will be organized by the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial in cooperation with the Research Center for Contemporary History Hamburg and the Institute for the History of the German Jews. It will take place from April 28th until April 30th, 2015 at the Research Center for Contemporary History Hamburg. Read more

The Hoffmann family handed over the documents and objects which belonged to Hermann Hoffmann to the Neuengamme Memorial Site Archive last Friday. In 1936, Oberlandesgericht (Higher Regional Court) convicted Hermann Hoffmann of illegal resistance activities in cooperation with the Communist Party of Germany after which he was brought to the Fuhlsbüttel penitentiary.
