In Remembrance of Jørgen Barfod

The Neuengamme concentration camp memorial mourns Jørgen Barfod who died on September 9, 2015 at the age of 97 in Denmark.

As a member of the Danish resistance movement Barfod had been arrested by the German occupants in December 1944. In January 1945 he was deported to Neuengamme concentration camp and later to the satellite camps Dessauer Ufer and Bullenhuser Damm. He was liberated by the White buses rescue action on April 20, 1945.

Barfod acted as a historian after the war. From 1971 to 1987 he was principal of the Freedom Museum in Copenhagen. He was one of the founders and some years the president of the Danish survivor’s organisation of Neuengamme concentration camp and fought against neglect until old age.
