On 1 December, the new cafeteria officially opened in the main exhibition building. It is open to visitors and employees from Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cafeteria serves warm and cold beverages at reasonable prices and will soon offer a small selection of snacks.
The cafeteria is run by the social enterprise Elbe-Werkstätten, which is one of the largest employers of people with disabilities in Germany. The cafeteria is managed by Maike Claussen, who is a trained specialist for assisting disabled people with work and training. The five disabled staff members are either trainees or employees at Elbe-Werkstätten. Prior to the cafeteria's opening, they took part in a special history course to decide whether they wanted to work in such an emotionally charged, historical environment. As part of this training, they took a guided tour of the Memorial led by Pastor Billerbeck, among others.
We are very pleased to welcome the Elbe-Werkstätten team at the Memorial and are looking forward to seeing many visitors at the cafeteria!
