Prisoners of the Neuengamme concentration camp in wartime Hamburg, 1943-1945" is the title of an exhibition by the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial which will be shown courtesy of the Hamburg Parliament at Hamburg City Hall from 17 January to 10 February 2019 to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On Friday, November 9, 2018, Marianne Wilke visited the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial to give a speech about her childhood under the oppression of the National Socialist Regime and the consequences on her life until today. She was the child of an “arian” mother and a Jewish father and was categorized “half Jewish” an suffered nearly the same consequences as Jews did. Her parents lived in what was called a “privileged marriage”. Her father was deported to Terezin in February 1945, he survived. Many members of his family did not share that luck though and were murdered e.g. in Riga and Minsk. Read more

Delegations from the Netherlands and France visited the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial on November 2, 2018 as a part of their commemorative journey (pèlerinage). Jean-Michel Gaussot, President of Amicale Internationale KZ Neuengamme, Martine Letterie, President of Stichting Vriendenkring Neuengamme and Jean-Michel Clère, President of Amicale de Neuengamme et de ses Kommandos accompanied the groups. Approximately 100 people took part in the journey. Read more

In 1945, shortly after his liberation from the Neuengamme concentration camp, Aage Jørgensen wrote down his experiences during the imprisonment. These notes remained unread for over 40 years, until they were found again. On Friday, the survivor visited the Memorial with his son and a Canadian film crew. The Dane who lives in Canada today was arrested as a resistance fighter in Copenhagen in 1944, deported to Dachau and later to Neuengamme. He was a prisoner of the so-called “Scandinavian camp” until his liberation in 1945. A documentary about his life is being made at the moment. Read more

Daniel Fröhlich donated personal belongings of Ferdinand von Reichel, a former prisoner, to the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial. During a visit to the memorial, the history teacher from Ilmenau spotted his great-granduncle’s wedding ring and WW1 Iron Cross in the Memorial’s main exhibition. Read more

This year has truly flown by. So much has happened this past year in a blink of an eye. At the start of spring, my fellow volunteer Daria and I cajoled the groundskeeper of Neuengamme to provide us with bikes, and since then I’ve discovered a beautiful bike route that leads straight from our Bergedorf apartment to the memorial site along a paved, former train track, dotted with meadows and grazing cows. These 22 minute rides have become some of the most precious moments of my day, infusing me with energy for the work ahead. Read more

Last Saturday commenced the yearly “Workcamp” of the Service Civil International in the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial. The concept began in the 1980s for participants from around the world to come to the memorial for two weeks and live on-site, create contacts, learn, converse over history and remembrance culture, and assist the memorial. This year’s summer camp was themed “Preparing an Exhibition.” Read more

On July 19th, 2018, a new temporary exhibition opened at the St. Nikolai Memorial titled “Only Ruins Lay Before Us”. A collaboration between the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial and the St. Nikolai Memorial Development Committee, the exhibition is open daily at the St. Nikolai Memorial until September 29th, 2018. The exhibition describes the 1943 bombing campaign in Hamburg. Read more
