The liberation of the Auschwitz death camp 76 years ago on January 27, 1945 did not mean the end of persecution, exploitation, oppression and murder of tens of thousands of people who continued to be imprisoned in concentration camps like Neuengamme. Especially in the last months of the war, thousands of prisoners died. We commemorated the suffering of the prisoners in an online event on Memorial Day for the Victims of National Socialism, coinciding with other memorials at sites of Nazi crimes. Read more

The Archive of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial has been very fortunate in acquiring an impressive new source. Gabriela Fenyes, a former board member of Hamburg’s Jewish Community, has just donated a register of passports to the Memorial Archive. While clearing out old documents dating back to her work for the Board in the 1990s, she came across a logbook that had been used to register the issuing of passports. Read more

What does liberation mean? What did it mean to concentration camp prisoners? What happened in the days before the liberation? What is the purpose of memorial sites? On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of the war and the liberation of concentration camps, memorial sites, which serve as reminders of the Nazi injustice, would like to raise the awareness of the topic in the social media in 2020. Nine survivors attended the commemorative events on the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the end of the war at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial: Nataliya Radchenko from Belarus, Nahum Rotenberg from Israel, Kseniya Olchova from Russia, Livia Fränkel and Elisabeth Kischinowski Masur from Sweden, Yevgeniy Malychin, Anton Rudnev and Karl Paiuk from Ukraine and Margot Heuman from the United States. Delegations and survivors’ associations from Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Germany also attended the events. Moreover, we were pleased to welcome numerous relatives of former prisoners of the Neuengamme concentration camp. Read more
