Research projects

One of the central tasks of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial is to initiate research projects and publish findings on the history of Neuengamme concentration camp and its satellite camps.

In this field of research, the memorial co-operates with numerous partners, including universities, research institutes, museums and other memorials, as well as historical workshops and initiatives, particularly those involved in researching the history of the satellite camps. The results of the memorial's research projects are regularly published in the journal Beiträge zur Geschichte der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung in Norddeutschland.

The following projects are currently underway:
  • Completion of prisoner databases
  • Evaluation of the "custody books" of former police prisons
  • Calendar of transport movements in comparison with documents from other memorial archives
  • Investigation of the satellite camp system, particularly the women's satellite camps
  • Reconstruction of the architectural history of Neuengamme concentration camp
  • Historical and art historical analyses of prisoner drawings
  • Research into the SS of Neuengamme concentration camp, particularly the female guards
